Kiwanis rallies late to beat KONP
PORT ANGELES — Kiwanis scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to claim a 10-9 come-from-behind 16U softball victory over KONP.
KONP roughed up Kiwanis pitcher Jada Cargo Acosta in the top of the second, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring six runs on five hits and four walks.
Kiwanis scored one run in the bottom of second.
After two quick outs to open the top of the third, KONP’s Starla Temres and Brittany Clark drew back-to-back walks and later scored on a hard-hit double by Aiesha Mathis to go up 8-1.
Kiwanis sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring six runs on six straight base hits, all after two quick outs.
Madison Belbin reached base safely, then Acosta, Isabelle Cottam, Amaris Martinez, Jasmine Cottam, Skyla Blackcrow and Nevaeh Selvidge all hit singles, but Kiwanis still trailed 8-7.
In top of fourth, KONP’s Peyton Hefton singled and stole second base. She scored on Mackenzie Carney’s triple to deep center field.
With two outs, Isabelle Cottam relieved Acosta and ended the threat with a key strikeout.
In the bottom of the fifth, Kiwanis loaded the bases with no outs.
Isabelle Cottam beat out a infield grounder, then promptly stole second and third. Amaris Martinez walked and stole second. Jasmine Cottam then walked to load the bases.
Skyla Blackcrow followed with a two-run single. Jasmine Cottam scored the third and final run after Breanna Kelly was hit by a pitch, to give Kiwanis a 10-9 lead.
Kiwanis still had the bases loaded with no outs when the game was called due to time constraints.
Eagles blanks Local
PORT ANGELES — Tyler Hunter and Trenton Gilbertson teamed up for a shutout as Eagles beat Local 155 8-0 in Cal Ripken baseball action.
Hunter and Gilbertson were backed up last Tuesday by a solid defense and were supported by an offense in which nine of 12 players had hits.
Eagles was led offensively by Easton Merritt, who broke out of a hitting slump with and single and triple .
For Local, Thor Olson recorded three hits.
Kiwanis rocks ILWU
PORT ANGELES — Kiwanis avenged an earlier 16U softbal loss to ILWU with a lopsided 19-4 victory in five innings.
Jada Cargo Acosta scored three runs and was the winning pitcher for Kiwanis.
Kiwanis started quickly, plating three runs in the first inning. Elizabeth Groff walked and Aiyana Jackson followed with a single. Both runners then advanced on a sacrifice by Madison Belbin.
Acosta then hit a hard grounder down left-field line that brought home both runners.
Acosta scored on a fly ball out by Amaris Martinez.
ILWU countered scoring a run on a fielder’s choice.
Kiwanis added three more runs in top of second with one out. Darien Woodward started the charge with a walk, and Jackson and Belbin singled. Another walk and a single by Isabelle Cottam did the damage.
Anna Brandt scored a run in the third to extend Kiwanis’ lead to 7-1.
In bottom of the third, Haley Robinson reached base on a throwing error and scored on a long double by Nacia Bohman. Bohman then stole third and later scored on a wild pitch.
Kiwanis iced the game by scoring six runs apiece the fourth and fifth innings.
Barn shuts down Power
PORT ANGELES — The Paint and Carpet Barn picked up their fifth 12U softball win by defeating PA Power and Equipment 15-4 in four innings.
Paint and Carpet had six hits and drew 11 walks, which led to six runs in the first inning, three in the second and six in the third.
PA Power led off by getting a pair of runs in the top of the first.
Isabelle Felton reached base on an error, moved to second on a overthrow, and later scored on a passed ball.
Lily Scheid walked, stole second and then scored on a fielder’s choice.
In the fourth inning, PA Power’s Jeanette Cary-Dewater reached base on a error and Ruby Achten walked stole second and third. Both players scored on a fielder’s choice.
For Paint and Carpet Barn , Savannah Bray pitched a no-hitter in four innings, recording nine strikeouts and four walks to earn her third win.
Katelynn Glass went 2 for 2, walked once and scored three runs. Ava Brinkman singled and walked, sand came around to score both times.
Paint and Carpet improves to 5-2 on the season.
