YOUTH SPORTS: Elks no-hits Laurel Lanes; Lions win first two games

Elks pitchers shut down Laurel Lanes

PORT ANGELES — Elks pitchers Seth Woods, Connor Bear and Wyatt Hall combined for a five-inning no-hitter, striking out eight as Elks bowled over Laurel Lanes 10-0.

Hall led Elks (1-1) at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a homer and a double, while scoring four runs in Thursday’s 12U Cal Ripken baseball game.

Woods, Bear, Damon Gundersen and Jaeden Platt each contributed two hits for the Elks offense.

Jake Jacobsen chipped in with a single and made a sharp defensive play to throw out a runner at second base on a force play from left field.

Zane Glassock reached base twice for Laurel Lanes.

Lions take two

PORT ANGELES — Lions picked up two 12U Cal Ripken baseball wins to open the season, edging Elks 5-3 and sneaking past Swain’s 2-1.

Lions defeated Elks 5-3 to open the season with a check in the win column Monday, March 30.

Derek Sparks plated Daniel Cable and Eli Cyr with a two-RBI single in the second inning.

Naaman McGuffey, Cable and Cyr all had hits as Lions scored three more runs in the third.

Lions starting pitcher Mason Nickovich combined with Michael Soule and Cyr to hold the Elks to two hits while striking out 10.

Dylan Abernathy also recorded the first hit of his career for Lions.

Dru Clark and Mason Nickovich each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning in Lions win over Swain’s on Thursday.

Nickovich allowed a hit to Beckett Jarnigan in the second. Jarnigan eventually scored on a throwing error, cutting the lead to one.

Micheal Soule pitched a scoreless third and fourth for Lions, and Cyr followed up by blanking Swain’s in the fifth and sixth.

Swain’s threatened in the top of the sixth after Chase Cobb led off with a line drive to right-center, and advanced to third on a Noard single.

Cobb attempted to steal home on a wild pitch but was called out at the plate when McGuffey fired a dart to a covering Cyr to end the game.
