YOUTH HOOPS: Port Angeles girls shine at MLK Jr. tournament

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles girls showed their strength at the annual Park and Recreation Department’s Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Basketball Tournament.

Port Angeles girls won the sixth-grade division and the eighth-grade division. The sixth-grade Port Angeles Elite girls beat out four other teams, while the Port Angeles Threat in the eight-grade division won by beating Lakewood Select 34-31 in the championship game.

The Port Angeles White eighth-grade boys team made it to the championship game of their division. This team finished second after falling to Stanwood 63-49.

Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend and Forks teams participated in the tournament. Teams from as far away as Tacoma and Mount Vernon were also among the 28 teams at the event.

Final standings include:

• Girls Fifth-Grade Division: White River Sting, first; South Kitsap Elite, second; Port Angeles, third; Bainbridge Roots, fourth; Lakewood Select, fifth; Sequim Wolves, sixth; Bainbridge Roots 4/5, seventh. Championship Game — Sting 27, South Kitsap 12.

• Girls Sixth-Grade Division: Port Angeles Elite, first; Meadowdale Lady Mavs, second; Bainbridge Roots, third; Lakewood Select, fourth; Sequim Wolves, fifth. (No Championship Game).

• Girls Seventh-Grade Division: Tacoma Reign Elite, first; Lakewood Select, second; Port Angeles Fire & Ice, third; Rams Hoops (Puyallup), fourth; Bainbridge Roots, fifth; Sequim Wolves, sixth. Championship Game — Tacoma Elite 38, Lakewood 24.

• Girls Eighth-Grade Division: Port Angeles Threat, first; Lakewood Select, second; Sequim Wolves, third. Championship Game — Port Angeles Threat 34, Lakewood Select 31.

• Boys Fourth-Grade Division: Mount Vernon, first; Lakewood Select, second; Port Angeles, third; Sedro Woolley, fourth. Championship Game — Mount Vernon 30, Lakewood 5.

• Boys Fifth-Grade Division: Bainbridge Roots, first; Lakewood Select, second; Stanwood Spartans, third; Sequim Wolves, fourth; Forks Rebels, fifth; Port Angeles White, sixth; Silverdale Spartans, seventh; Port Angeles Green, eighth. Championship Game — Roots 44, Lakewood Select 37.

• Boys Sixth-Grade Division: Bainbridge Roots, first; Mount Vernon, second; Clutch Basketball (University Place), third; Lakewood Select, fourth; South Kitsap Elite, fifth; Port Angeles White, sixth; Port Angeles Green, seventh; Drive Basketball (Poulsbo), eighth. Championship Game — Bainbridge Roots 43, Mount Vernon 29.

• Boys Seventh-Grade Division: Stanwood Spartans, first; White River Sting Gold, second; Bainbridge Roots, third; Drive Blue, fourth; Lakewood Select, fifth; White River Sting Maroon, sixth; F-Town Elite (Forks), seventh; Crush Select (Port Townsend), eighth; Drive White, ninth; Port Angeles Green, 10th; Port Angeles White, 11th; Silverdale Spartans, 12th. Championship Game — Stanwood 63, Sting Gold 51.

• Boys Eighth-Grade Division: Stanwood Spartans, first; Port Angeles White, second; Lakewood Select, third; Sequim Wolves, fourth; South Kitsap Elite, fifth; Drive, sixth; Bainbridge Roots, seventh; Port Angeles Green, eighth. Championship Game — Stanwood 63, Port Angeles White 49.
