PORT ANGELES — Next Door Gastropub’s Olympic Avalanche Black eighth-grade basketball girls are seeking a bit of a financial boost to help them realize a years-long dream.
The girls have been hoping to play in the West Coast Swoosh tournament, held in Southern California at the end of April, as a bit of a swan song, said head coach Joe Marvelle. The girls, who have been together since the fourth grade, will be wrapping up their youth basketball careers soon and moving on to high school. Many of them will probably be playing for the Port Angeles High School teams next year.
Marvelle said it will cost about $11,000 for the team to play in the tournament and that they are about $4,500 short of their goal. The girls have held some fundraisers through Next Door Gastropub.
“It’s something we’ve wanted to do since they were fourth- graders,” Marvelle said.
Marvelle said that sometime during the next month, the girls will be holding a free-throw-a-thon, in which donors can contribute for each free throw a girl makes over an alloted time.
The Olympic Avalanche Black girls have won 16 tournaments in their youth basketball career and have compiled a won-loss record of 132-38.
