Eagles soaring in early season Cal Ripken games
PORT ANGELES — Eagles have opened the Cal Ripken Majors baseball season with a 4-0 start, with wins over Lions, Hi-Tech Electronics, Nor’wester Rotary and Local 155.
Eagles coach Rob Elofson has been able to do this with the top of the lineup (Kaeden Indelicato, Jordan Shumway, Tyler Hunter and Cole Johnson) having a high on-base percentage. Elofson said Shumway, Johnson and Hunter all have at least one double, along with many base hits. Those three, along with Scotty Bates and new Eagles player Brian Guttormsen, are all pitching well.
Tuesday night, Eagles edged Local 155 5-4.
Hunter started the game on the mound and racked up eight strikeouts in five innings and also went 2 for 2 and scored twice. Guttormsen made a couple of great catches in center field, had an RBI at the plate and closed out the game to earn a save.
Local pulled within one run with two outs in the sixth and last inning. Luke Flodstrom and Blake Meredith combined to strike out 12 Eagles. Meredith and Alex Angevine each scored twice for Local.
Lions are roaring
PORT ANGELES — Lions doubled up Nor’wester Rotary 12-6 in a Cal Ripken Majors baseball contest Tuesday.
Lions had 12 hits in the victory, led by Brady Groff’s 3 for 4 night at the plate.
Rylan Politika, Khason Albaugh and Jason Hawes each had two hits for Lions. Norwester was led by Dominic Sprague’s two hits.
Tranco is scoring
PORT ANGELES — Tranco slugged out a 17-15 win over Paint and Carpet Barn in 12U softball action Tuesday.
Lily Halberg, Abby Frank, Holly Tietjen, Teanna Clark and McKenzie Moses all had hits to the outfield.
All but one Tranco player scored in the game, and Halberg, Frank and Tietjen scored three times apiece. Clark and Tatum Moses had two runs for Tranco.
Lynzee Reid, Lexie Smith and Aubree Hebert scored three runs apiece for Paint and Carpet.
Athletes’ wins big
PORT ANGELES — Athlete’s Choice pounded out an 11-1 Olympic Junior Babe Ruth victory in five innings over Swain’s led by hitters Hunter Robinson, Wyatt Hall, Kamron Meadow and Gunnar Volkmann.
Meadows allowed one run on two hits and five walks, striking out seven in 4 2/3 innings pitched.
Volkmann got the final out after inheriting a bases-loaded jam.
Bryson Morris added an RBI double and Elisha Dujue scored three runs after getting hit by a pitch and walking twice.
Swain’s got hits from Tanner Price and John Vaara.
Lions over Hi Tech 13-3
PORT ANGELES — Lions defeated Hi Tech 13-3 in North Olympic Baseball and Softball action on Thursday.
Lions jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first with help from an inside-the-park homer by Aiden Swenson ( 2 for 3, two runs, three RBI). Cole Beeman singled and eventually scored (3 for 4, three runs, RBI).
Hi Tech got on the board in the third inning when Austin Worthington (2 for 3, two runs) singled and came around to scored
In the bottom of the third, Rylan Politika picked up a two-RBI in-the-park home run on a hard ground ball down the first base line. Politika finished the game 2 for 4 with a run and three RBIs.
In the top of the fourth, Josiah Gooding (2 for 3) drove in Worthington with a hard line drive single to right field.
Lions opened up the game in the bottom of the fifth with seven hits, including an RBI by Aidric McBride, his first of the season.
Beeman started the game on the mound for the Lions, pitching three innings, striking out nine and giving up three hits and only one run. Politika pitched two innings of relief, with four strike outs, allowing two hits and one run. Brady Groff pitched the sixth inning with one strike out.
