YOUTH BASEBALL: North Olympic rolling at Cal Ripken 12U state tourney

FERNDALE — The North Olympic 12U baseball team capped pool play with a 3-0 record and takes the top seed to the elimination round of the Cal Ripken state baseball tournament.

Port Angeles picked up two one-run wins Friday, knocking off Lynden 9-8 and Ellensburg 4-3.

The area team opened the tournament by beating the Whatcom Nationals 17-4 on Thursday.

Against Lynden, Port Angeles nearly blew leads of 8-2 and 9-6, but hung on for

the win.

In the top of the sixth, Lynden capitalized on a misplayed outfield fly ball to put runners at second and third with one out.

Port Angeles then got a ground out to short before Lynden hit a two-run single to pull within one and put the tying run aboard.

But Port Angeles pitcher Wyatt Hall forced a routine ground ball to second base to close the game and earn the save.

Kamron Noard was the winning pitcher.

Leading hitters were Jake Felton, who went 2 for 2 with a double; Chase Cobb, who was 2 for 3 with a double; and Seth Woods, who singled twice.

Port Angeles edged Ellensburg in Friday’s opener behind the strong pitching of Hall, Noard and Eli Cyr.

Landon Seibel led at the plate with a 2 for 2 performance, including a walk and a run scored.

Cobb also contributed an RBI double, and Dru Clark turned in two excellent defensive plays from the hot corner at third base to help protect the slim lead and earn MVP honors for the game.

Against Whatcom, Port Angeles pounded out 15 hits and played error-free defense.

Felton was 3 for 4 to lead all hitters, and Seibel, Cobb and Woods each had two hits.

Clark and Adam Watkins each contributed RBI doubles, and Woods scored three runs.
