PORT ANGELES — Sequim edged out rival Port Angeles for the Axe at the Roughriders’ Battle for the Axe wrestling tournament. Forks finished third and Port Townsend was fourth in the All-North Olympic Peninsula four-team dual.

The Wolves and Riders tied with 36 points in their dual match, but Sequim earned the win via tiebreaker.

“They do it by total matches won,” Port Angeles coach Brent Wasche said.

“They won one more match head-to-head.”

Wasche said his team was a little up and down during Thursday’s matches.

“We didn’t show up and wrestle our best against Sequim, but we came back against Forks and redeemed ourselves from a loss earlier this season.”

Wasche said first-year heavyweight Hayden Wickham did a great job as well as Cody Anderson at 126 pounds and Daniel Basden at 106 pounds.

“Cody Anderson went undefeated and wrestled up a weight at 126,” Wasche said. And Daniel Basden wrestled really tough for us. He’s a sophomore that’s working himself into a hell of a wrestler.”

Port Angeles will travel to Spokane to compete in the Dream Duals next weekend.

“That tournament is as tough as they come,” Wasche said.

“We took second last year and we are hoping to get back to the finals for another shot at the title.”
