WRESTLING: Olympic Peninsula grapplers place at Bainbridge tournament

BAINBRIDGE — Several wrestlers from Port Angeles, Sequim and East Jefferson placed high in their weight divisions at the Bainbridge Island tournament held this weekend.

The Port Angeles boys came in fifth with 147 points. Kennedy Christian won the meet with 189.5 points, while Central Kitsap had 163, Blaine 156 and North Kitsap 152. Sequim was eighth with 65 points and East Jefferson 10th with 38.

Winning his weight division was East Jefferson’s Logan Massie with a perfect 3-0 record at 170 pounds. In the championship bout, Massie had to beat a 4A wrestler from Kennedy Catholic, Emanuel Collins, who is ranked No. 6 in the state.

Several local girls finished first.

“I am pretty sure the girls won as a team but they didn’t do girls team awards,” said East Jefferson coach Stephen Grimm.

Winning their weight divisions for East Jefferson were Mi Amanda Lanphear-Ramirez at 115 pounds, while Melody Douglas took first at 140 pounds. Port Angeles girls winning their weight divisions were Faye Dachs at 120 pounds and Kennedy Bruch at 135.

A number of wrestlers came in second.

Port Angeles’ Phoenix Flores, just a freshman, finished second at 132 pounds, while his Roughriders teammates Ethan Abrams was second at 138 pounds and Jack Harrelson was second at 145.

Among the girls, East Jefferson’s Lily Delgado was second at 120 pounds and her teammate Savanna Hoffman was second at 125. East Jefferson’s Devon Bennett-Anderson was second at 195 pounds.

“We had a small team, but the ones we brought wrestled like dynamite,” Grimm said.

“Missing a few kids, but overall it was a good day,” said Port Angeles coach Rob Gale.
