HOQUIAM — The Forks boys won four weight classes en route to a Region I Class 1A Wrestling Tournament championship and will send 13 boys to the Mat Classic state wrestling tournament at the Tacoma Dome this weekend.
Forks took the team title with 239 points. Montesano came in a distant second with 198.
Forks’ Marissa Bailey also qualifed for the state girls’ wrestling tournament.
Forks took 16 wrestlers to regionals to begin with.
“Losing only three of the 16 wrestlers at the regional tournament is exceptional,” said coach Robert Wheeler. “Our kids are really peaking at the right time. Hopefully, we can make another step up and get some state placers that people just were not expecting.”
Forks’ Josue Lucas won at the 106-pound weight class with three straight pins, while Garrison Schumack won the 145-pound title, beating teammate Colby Demorest in the finals.
Jack Dahlgren won at 195 pounds, while Luke Dahlgren won at 220 pounds, pinning Cody McLain of Chimacum in the championship.
The top four wrestlers at each weight qualify for the Mat Classic. Also qualifying from Forks were Brett Moody, who came in second at 160 pounds; Nathan Flores, second, 285 pounds.; Gavin Palmer, third, 152 pounds; Kenny Gale, third, 170 pounds; Eden Cisneros, third, 195 pounds; Shane Queen, fourth 160 pounds; and Tristen Pisani, fourth, 220 pounds. Keith Thompson finished fifth and will be an alternate at 138 pounds.
Several wrestlers from Port Townsend and Chimacum also qualified for the Mat Classic.
McClain will be joined at the Tacoma Dome by Cowboys teammate Ryan Caldwell, who came in fourth at 182 pounds.
Port Townsend wrestlers making the Classic are Jacob Massie, who came in third at 285 pounds; Tucket Booth, fourth at 285; Henry Veitenhans, fourth, 145. Port Townsend’s Jesus Duran finished fifth at 132 pounds and will attend the Mat Classic as an alternate.
