WOMEN’S SOCCER: Peninsula women win NWAC championship 1-0 in overtime

TUKWILA — The Peninsula Soccer women won the Northwest Conference Championship with a 1-0 second overtime win over Highline Sunday at the Starfire Soccer Complex.

Peninsula and Highline fought to a scoreless tie and appeared headed for penalty kicks when Bri Valiente scored for the Pirates in the eighth minute of the second overtime.

It was the women’s first NWAC title since 2013 and their third since 2012. The women have played in the championship match four times since 2011.

Highline, winner of the West Division is the runner-up of the NWAC two years in a row and finishes the season at 17-3.

The women, who came into the NWAC Final Four ranked No. 1 in the league and No. 12 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Associates of America Division I Junior College Poll, won the North Division of the NWAC with a perfect 15-0-0 record (19-1-1 overall). It was the Pirates’ sixth-straight regional championship and they have played in the Final Four for six straight years.
