PORT ANGELES — Peninsula broke through for two first-half goals and knocked off perennial NWAC Eastern Region power Spokane 2-0 in a women’s soccer match Saturday at Peninsula College.

“We played with a little more committment to what the game presented us,” Pirates coach Kanyon Anderson said.

“Both of the goals came off of pretty good pressure from our defense.

“Early on in the season when you are still building chemistry its’ not really about scoring beautiful goals, it’s more about forcing turnovers and capitalizing.”

Peninsula opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Sam Guzman headed in a corner kick by Emilee Greve

The first couple games of the season are about seeing what you are and who you have available,” Pirates coach Kanyon Anderson said.

“That was a really nice corner by Emileee and a great header by Sam,” Anderson said.

Guzman is a sophomore defender on the Pirates back line. She showed a knack for coming up and scoring off set pieces last season, Anderson said.

“She’s done that quite a bit for us,” Anderson said. “That was great, Sam is a super talented player.”

The other goal came seven minutes later.

“We forced a turnover in their end, and Sam Oliveira, who is one of our freshman strikers, was all over it,” Anderson said.

Andrea Kenagy played the full 90 minutes in goal and had four saves to earn the shutout.

“She did a nice job in goal,” Anderson said. “Spokane has a fast striker Cheris Brown, and she came really close to some goals, but Andrea made some good plays to come off the line early and break things up before they developed any further.”

Peninsula (1-2-0) hosts North Idaho at 10 a.m. today.
