WOMEN’S SOCCER: Peninsula College hosting Treasure Valley in NWAC quarterfinals today

PORT ANGELES — Today’s quarterfinal match between the Peninsula College women’s soccer team and Treasure Valley is an East vs. West showdown with a trip to the Northwest Athletic Conference Final Four awaiting the winner.

The Pirates are ranked No. 1 in the NWAC and No. 6 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Junior College Division I Poll.

Peninsula finished the regular season with a 17-1-2 record, 15-1-2 in conference play, tying Highline for the West Division championship, the Pirates’ fourth straight title.

Treasure Valley, meanwhile, is ranked No. 6 in the NWAC poll, after going 14-3-4 in their regular season, including an 11-3-3 effort that left them in second place in the East.

The Chukars defeated Edmonds in a shootout in the first round of the playoffs at home in Ontario, Ore.

Dynamic defense

The Pirates are without question the best team in the NWAC on the defensive side of the field, allowing only two goals in 20 matches and finishing with a school-record 18 shutouts.

Leading that defensive effort have been sophomores Kamryn Barney, Katelyn Raatz and Brooke Yoshimura, as well as freshmen Tori Hagen, Karen Corral, Kendall Howell, Kai Mahuka and Olivia Moore.

Sophomore keeper Emily Flinn has yet to be scored on in 2014. She has five shutouts.

Sophomore Kasie Lough has allowed one goal and leads the team with seven shutouts.

Redshirt freshman Mania Siania-Unutoa also has allowed one goal and has recorded three shutouts.

At the offensive end, the Pirates are the second in the NWAC in scoring with 77 goals.

The balanced attack is led by C.J. Stetser with 10, Lexi Krieger with nine, and seven each from Tasha Inong, Paige Mahuka and Mary Pierce.

Solana Ashe has six and Alyssa Bertuleit and Larkyn Nelson have five each.

Port Angeles High School graduate Paxton Rodocker leads the Pirates in assists with eight, while Brittney Yoshimura has seven and Kayla Bell has five.

Treasure Valley has scored 43 goals and allowed 18 this season. Alex Rivera is the Chukars’ leading scorer with 12 goals and Brooke Thomas has eight.

Goalkeeper Tessa Pitzer has four shutouts and 72 saves.

Kickoff for today’s match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wally Sigmar Field, located on the Peninsula College campus in Port Angeles.

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for seniors and youth.

The match also will be video streamed. The link is on the school’s athletic website www.GoPCPirates.com.
