LONGVIEW— The Peninsula basketball women got off to a tough start in their opening two games of the season, struggling with their shooting and dropping a pair this weekend on the road to Lower Columbia College and Mount Hood.
In the two games combined, the women shot just 27.7 percent from the field.
The women shot 33 percent from the floor, including 2-for-13 from 3-point range, in a 71-55 loss to Lower Community College Sunday.
Jenise McKnight led the team with 13 points and was 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Yamilei Rodriguez scored 12 points and Anaya Rodisha chipped in 11 with seven rebounds.
The Pirates were close at halftime, down just 31-27, but were outscored 40-28 in the second half. The Red Devils shot only slightly better than the Pirates at 40 percent, but they did shoot 7-for-17 on their 3-pointers.

GRESHAM, Ore. — On Saturday, the Pirates had a rough shooting night, yet thanks to their rebounding and ability to draw fouls still nearly pulled out a victory on the road against Mount Hood.
The women shot just 24 percent from the field and 2-for-20 from 3-point range, yet nearly managed to win, falling 62-61 to the Saints. Rebounding and free throws kept the Pirates in the game, as they outboarded Mount Hood 57-42. Because of their success on the glass, Peninsula was able to shoot 75 shots to Mount Hood’s 59.
The Pirates also shot 32 free throws to the Saints’ eight, making 23 to the Saints’ six.
A terrible third period, in which they were outscored 23-6, doomed the Pirates. Peninsula stormed back in the fourth, outscoring the Saints 19-10, but it wasn’t enough to pull out the victory.
Alicia Dugan led the Pirates with 18 points on 5-for-22 from the field and 2-for-12 from 3-point range. Dugan added seven boards and three steals.
McKnight scored 16 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Taisha Thomas scored eight points and pulled down eight boards.
