WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Peninsula rallies for first league victory

PORT ANGELES — Tiffani Smith hit the go-ahead layup with 29 seconds remaining and Ashlynn Sharp knocked down four free throws in the final moments as the Peninsula College women’s basketball team rallied for a 79-76 win over Skagit Valley.

The Pirates (1-3, 3-13) trailed 24-16 after one quarter, 39-32 at halftime and overcame a 61-56 deficit entering the fourth quarter to earn their first NWAC North Region win and snap a three-game losing skid.

Smith tied the game at 68-all on a 3-point basket with 5:04 to play and gave Peninsula its first lead of the game on a free throw with 2:24 left.

Sharp hit a layup with 32 seconds to play to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 74-73. Three seconds later, Yamilei Rodriguez stole the ball and Smith hit the go-ahead layup.

Skagit Valley got a look at a tying 3 late, but missed.

Sharp led all scorers with 25 points on 8 of 13 shooting, including 5 of 8 on 3s. Sharp also had seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Jamellia Clark had a double-double for the Pirates with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Clark went 6 of 10 from the floor and 4 of 5 at the free throw line.

Tiffani Smith had 14 points and five assists in the win.

The Pirates visit Edmonds (0-4, 3-16) for a 2 p.m. game Saturday.
