PORT ANGELES — Peninsula College controlled all aspects of its 80-46 women’s basketball victory at home Wednesday.
“It was a really good team win, awesome to play everyone similar minutes, and our bench players came in and played so well,” coach Alison Crumb said. “They really played seamlessly and played with confidence, and that’s what you want to see. It shows the value of our practices and builds support for each other.
“We had balanced scoring, we shot well, and defensively we got better and better. We tried to play with pace and I thought we did a good job of that.”
Lainey Suaava came off the bench and led the Pirates with 14 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the floor along with five rebounds, two steals and an assist in 21 minutes of action.
“She’s a great post player for us and is learning the art of how to play without fouling,” Crumb said. “It’s hard to get into a rhythm and get something going when you are dealing with foul trouble and going back to the bench.”
Starter Ciera Tugade Agasiva drained all three 3-point shots she attempted on her way to 13 points.
“She was on and would have had more if we had needed her to play more minutes,” Crumb said.
The North Olympic Peninsula contingent also had an impact. Neah Bay’s Allie Greene drained 3 of 4 3s and had four steals to go with her nine points.
Sequim’s Jelissa Julmist started and scored six points with four rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist.
Former Wolves teammate Hannah Bates added eight points, a steal and an assist, and Forks’ Kadie Wood grabbed two rebounds in the win.
Peninsula (4-0, 11-2) hosts Olympic at 2 p.m. Saturday amid Pirate Pete’s Week celebrations.
“They play this very annoying zone that we are going to have to figure out how to replicate in practice,” Crumb said of the Rangers. “They have good guards. They don’t have any quit in them. We have that quality, but I’m not sure they have played a team as feisty as this so far.”
