PORT ANGELES — The Peninsula College men and women both lost close games in their openers of the Pirate Classic on Saturday.
The men lost to Lane 54-50 in a defensive battle, while the women gave up 27 points in the fourth quarter while dropping a game to Chemeketa 68-61. It was the women’s first loss of the season.
In the women’s game, the Pirates got off to a nice start, jumping out to a 23-10 lead after the first quarter. They went into the fourth quarter in good shape, up 53-41, but were outscored in a rough fourth period 27-8.
Chemeketa hit four 3-pointers in that fourth quarter, while the Pirates shot 2-for-13 (15.4 percent). The Peninsula women came into the fourth shooting 50 percent from the field.
Tayvia Cabatbat led the Pirates with 13 points, while Ituau Tuisaula had 10 points and Ariyanna Camacho-Villafuerte had nine. Adam Kaganak and Port Angeles’ Millie Long each scored eight. Tuisaula led the team with nine rebounds, while Tatiana Kamae had five steals and Long four steals.
In the men’s game, the Pirates held Lane to 43.6 percent shooting, but struggled from the field themselves, shooting just 11 percent on their 3-pointers (2-for-18).
Isaiah Sampson led the Pirates with 18 points, while Jaylin Reed had 13 points. Reed led the team with seven rebounds and four assists. Isaac Garcia had eight points.
The women (3-1) played Sunday against Highline, while the men (4-2) played Tacoma, with both games after press deadline.
The women next play Pierce College on Friday at the Raider Classic. The men next play Clackamas at the Edmonds Classic on Saturday.
