Wilder splits in state tune-up

BELLEVUE — Fresh off winning Babe Ruth Baseball’s Pacific Northwest Regional Championship Saturday evening, Wilder Senior stepped back into American Legion play, splittling a doubleheader with longtime summer foe Lakeside Recovery Legion on Sunday.

Wilder Senior fell 5-1 in the first contest, before triumphing 4-2 in the nightcap at Newport High School.

Ethan Staples drove in Jordan Shumway with a fifth-inning RBI single after Shumway led off the frame with a single to put Wilder Senior up 1-0 in the opener.

Lakeside finally got to Wilder starter Zeke Schmadeke in the bottom of the sixth.

Schmadeke allowed a leadoff single to balloon into a five-run frame after giving up four hits, three walks and hitting a batter

Game two

The Sequim senior led off the second game with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and came home on Colton Romero’s ground out.

Josiah Gooding put Wilder up 2-1 when he drove in Brayden White who had reached on Wilder’s lone extra-base hit, a double.

Romero added a sacrifice fly to score Alex Angevine in the top of the sixth and Schmadeke walked and scored on a passed ball to go up 4-1

Kody Williams tossed a complete-game six-hitter in the second contest, striking out four and walking a batter.

Wilder Senior will open the Washington American Legion AAA State Tournament on Saturday in Selah.
