PORT ANGELES — Johnnie Young had himself a day to remember for the Wilder Baseball Club.
Young had a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth inning as Wilder came back from a 9-2 deficit to beat Baseball Beyond Borders 10-9 in a morning game Monday. Then in the afternoon game, Young pitched a five-inning, six-hit shutout as Wilder won 10-0 to complete the sweep.
The doubleheader sweep vaulted Wilder all alone into first place in the Area 1 NW AAA League with an important doubleheader today that could clinch the league title.
In the early game, Wilder fell behind 9-2 after 2½ innings. Starting pitcher Bo Bradow only gave up one earned run, but was undone by eight unearned runs as Wilder struggled a bit in the field with four errors.
But Wilder slowly chipped away at the lead as relievers Jadon Seibel and Tyler Bowen slammed the door on BBB. Seibel went 2 2/3 innings, giving up no hits and no runs on one walk, while Bowen went 1 2/3 innings, giving up 1 hit and no runs with no walks.
Meanwhile, Wilder scored two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 9-6 going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Wilder got five straight hits from Carson Jackson, Ethan Flodstrom, Tyler Bowen, Gavin Guerrero and Ian Miller to score three runs to tie it at 9-9. Young made it six hits in a row with a single to score Bowen from third base with the winning run.
Guerrero finished the game 3 for 3 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while Flodstrom 2-3 with two doubles, including a crucial double in that seventh inning, two runs scored and two RBIs. Jackson was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Joel Wood was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, Bowen was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI and Miller was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
In the second game, Young pitched the entire game that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. He struck out six, walked two and gave up six hits.
Flodstrom was 3 for 4 with a double, a run scored, two stolen bases and four RBIs. Bowen was 2 for 2 with three runs scored, while Jackson was 2 for 3 with a run scored, two RBIs and a walk. Wood was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Bowen was 2 for 2 with three runs scored, Brody Merritt was 1 for 2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk and Milo Whitman was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Wilder (24-4 overall, 11-1 in league) plays Lakeside AAA at home in a doubleheader today at Volunteer Field beginning at 2:30 p.m. Lakeside is 10-1 in league, so these games today are likely for the league championship.
