CLACKAMAS, Ore. — Wilder had its 13-game winning streak snapped this weekend at the Diamond Classic at Clackamas High School, but the Olympic Peninsula team is alive for the tournament championship.
Wilder beat Jesuit of Beaverton, Ore., 4-2 on Thursday night, then beat Grant of Portland 7-0 Friday morning for their 12th and 13th straight wins. It finally took a team eight innings to beat Wilder as Canby, Ore., nipped the local boys 7-6.
Against Jesuit, Ethan Flodstrom pitched five innings, striking out five and giving up two earned runs. He also had a double and a walk at the plate. Johnnie Young was 2 for 3 with two doubles, while Bo Bradow was 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles. Brody Merritt picked up the save, going two innings and striking out four without giving up any runs.
Against Grant, the Sequim duo of Ian Miller and Young combined for the shutout. Miller went four innings, giving up just two hits and no walks while striking out two. Young pitched the final three innings, striking out two. Young also went 1 for 3 at the plate with a walk.
Joel Wood was 3 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and a walk. Carson Jackson was 1 for 2 with two walks and Milo Whitman was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.
Against Canby on Saturday, Flodstrom was 2 for 4 with a run scored and Gavin Guerrero was 2 for 4 with a run. Jackson was 1 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. Merritt was 1 for 3 with a walk.
Tyler Bowen started the game, going five innings, striking out four and giving up three earned runs. Guerrero pitched an inning, giving up three earned runs and Bradow gave up one earned run and struck out two in two innings.
Wilder, 17-3 overall, will play in the Diamond Classic semifinal at 5 p.m. today. If Wilder wins, the local kids will play at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the championship.
Wilder Jr. wins
PORT ANGELES — Wilder Jr. got a clutch single from Timmy Adams in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday to cap off a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Mount Vernon Riverdogs.
It was Wilder Jr.’s (12-8) fifth win in a row.
The Riverdogs’ Ethan Lewis had kept the Wilder Jr. bats quiet for five innings as the Mount Vernon team held on to a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Wilder Jr. erupted for four runs, with the big blows being an Adam Watkins two-run double and an RBI single by Tanner Price. Tanner Lunt also drove in a run on a groundout.
The Riverdogs bounced back with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, knotting the game up at 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mason Nickovich started a Wilder Jr. rally when he was hit by a pitch. He moved to second base on a walk to Wyatt Hall. After Jacob Felton walked to load the bases, Adams delivered the game-winning single.
Kaleb Ripley finished the game 2 for 3.
Wilder Jr. used six pitchers in the game, who combined to five up five hits, three walks and no earned runs.
Wilder Jr. played a second game against the Riverdogs Saturday. Results of that game will be published in Monday’s Peninsula Daily News sports section.
