WILDER BASEBALL: AA squad drops district tournament opener

Breaks nine-game win streak

BURLINGTON — The Wilder Junior Baseball Club was unable to hang on to a lead as Whatcom Post No. 7 came from behind to nip the Olympic Peninsula team 12-9 in the AA district tournament in Burlington.

Wednesday’s loss snapped a nine-game winning streak by the Wilder Jr. Club (21-8)

Wilder Jr. got up 8-0 after four innings, but Whatcom was able to come back with two in the top of the fifth, eight in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Wilder Jr. tried to rally with a run in the seventh but couldn’t recover.

At the plate, Bryce DeLeon was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Gunner Rogers was 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored, an RBI and four stolen bases. Ethan Staples doubled and drove in a run, while Rylan Politika tripled, scored two runs, drove in one and stole a base.

Kody Williams started the game on the mound and pitched well, going four innings and allowing four hits and no runs while striking out eight.

Wilder Jr. is set to play another tournament game at 6 p.m. today.

Wilder A splits double dip

NORTH BEACH —Wilder A bounced back after a rough opening game against the Northwest Sting by winning the nightcap of a doubleheader 10-6.

Wilder A lost a wild opening game Wednesday 11-10 on a walkoff by the Northwest Sting.

In the nightcap, Wilder A only managed four hits, but was able to tally 10 runs thanks to 10 walks, three hit batsmen and six steals.

Andre Campbell had a double and scored two runs, while Ian Smithson had a single, a walk and scored three runs. Carson Waddell had a hit and scored two runs, and Brayden Marin had a hit, a walk and an RBI. Easton Fisher had a sacrifice fly and drove in two runs.

On the mound, Martin started and got the win. He win four innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out six. Maeson Grice pitched two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The early game was similar with Wilder A only collecting three hits. They were able to score 10 runs thanks to 11 walks, four hit batsmen and a staggering 17 stolen bases.

Campbell scored two runs, walking twice and stealing five bases. Fisher was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run scored, while Martin was 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI.

Wilder A (12-11) next plays the Riverdogs A team on Saturday.
