WEST COAST LEAGUE: Port Angeles Lefties win in return home

PORT ANGELES — Home, sweet home for the Port Angeles Lefties.

The Lefties began a long stretch of mostly home games at Civic Field on Monday night with a 4-1 win over the Nanaimo NightOwls, a new West Coast League franchise making its first trip to Port Angeles.

The Lefties got outstanding pitching from a trio of pitchers and a home run and RBI single from Will Mulflur (University of Iowa) to get back on the winning track after losing a pair of series on the road against Bellingham and Kamloops.

The Lefties will play 23 out of their next 32 games at home after taking two long road trips to Canada in June.

Port Angeles’ Andrew Hauck (Utah Valley) won his third game of the year. He went five innings, allowed one run on a solo home run, struck out four and walked none. Trey Maeker (Fordham) pitched three innings, allowing one hit, three walks and no runs while striking out three.

The Lefties also played well in the field, going the entire game without making an error. Port Angeles also turned three double plays.

Andrew Monson (Spokane Falls Community College) pitched the ninth, allowing one hit and one walk but no runs to earn a save. He struck out one.

At the plate, the Lefties did most of their damage in the fourth inning on four hits and an error. After Mason Persons (Edmonds Community College) and Riley Parker (Cal State, San Bernardino) got on base on an error and a single, the Lefties scored runs on consecutive RBI singles by Ben Steck (Santa Clara), Mulflur and Isaiah Munoz (Hawaii).

Mulflur added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run.

Munoz finished the game 2-for-4.

Port Angeles (10-14 West Coast League, 12-15 overall) played Tuesday night after press deadline. The Lefties wrap up the series with Nanaimo (9-11) at 6:45 p.m. today at Civic Field. They have Thursday off, then take a short three-game road trip to Corvallis, Ore., over the Fourth of July weekend.
