WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties swept by Springfield to open season

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — The Port Angeles Lefties got off to rough start in the 2023 West Coast League wooden bat baseball campaign, getting swept on the road by the Springfrield Drifters to open the season.

Springfield beat the Lefties 8-2 on Sunday and 18-2 on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, the Lefties got some good pitching mid-game, but four Springfield runs in the second inning and three more in the eighth doomed them.

Makana Quia (Hawaii Pacific) made the start and took the loss, going two innings and allowing four earned runs. He struck out two and walked two. Kamden Koester (Neosha County CC) went three innings, allowing one earned run on two hits. He walked five. CJ Lewis of Jackson State pitched a good game, going two innings, allowing two hits, one walk and no runs. He struck out two.

Garrett Holpuck of Centralia College pitched the final inning, giving up three hits and three earned runs.

At the plate, Robert Nunez (Embry-Riddle University) had a solid weekend. He went 2-for-4. Barrett Rose (Stephen A. Austin) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a walk and Trent Jackson (Hawaii-Hilo) hit a triple and drove in a run. MJ Kim (New Mexico Military Institute) had a double and run scored.

Port Angeles (0-3) travels across the Cascade Mountains to begin a three-game series at Bend at 6:35 p.m. today.

Saturday’s game

After a good opening-day game Friday night, the Lefties’ pitching staff struggling Saturday in an 18-2 loss to Springfield.

Five Lefties pitchers gave up 15 hits, 11 walks and 17 earned runs against the Drifters. Springfield scored six runs in the second inning, three in the fifth and six in the eighth. Starter Joey Peralta (Mount San Antonio College, Calif.), took the loss.

At the plate, the Lefties managed just four hits. Nunez was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Koester was 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Ethan Young (Lafayette) also hit a double and scored a run.

The Lefties lost their season opener Friday 4-3 on a walk-off single by Springfield in the bottom of the ninth.
