WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties swept by AppleSox, return home Tuesday

Former Roughrider John Vaara pitches well

WENATCHEE — The Port Angeles Lefties continued to struggle in a 15-2 loss, their largest deficit of the season, to the Wenatchee AppleSox.

Every hitter in the Wenatchee starting lineup recorded a hit in Sunday’s game as the AppleSox belted 17 hits. Ten of their runs came across in the first two innings. First baseman Damon Gaither (Coppin State) led the way for Wenatchee, notching five RBIs, including a bases-clearing double in the first frame.

One of the bright spots for Port Angeles was pitcher John Vaara, who came out of the bullpen in the second inning to pitch four innings and only gave up one earned run. The Port Angeles High School graduate, now a member of the Edmonds Community College baseball team, also struck out six AppleSox as he kept the game as close as he could.

The duo of Eric Schumann (Embry-Riddle) and Alec Hagopian, both from Embry-Riddle University in Prescott, Ariz., pitched well, going a combined 2⅓ innings and allowing two hits and no runs.

The Lefties’ bats struggled for hits as the top six batters in the order went a combined 1-for-19 and the team finished with just four hits.

The lone hit from the top of the lineup came from Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino), who is batting .357 and now has a base hit in all of the Lefties’ West Coast League matchups. Giesegh hit a leadoff single to start out the game and came around to score on a Colin Spear (Nevada) sacrifice fly.

Aiden Arriaga (Point Loma Nazarene), Julio Vasquez (Henderson State) and Yahir Ramirez (Texas A&M Corpus Christi) all had hits.

The Lefties, in need of a win after starting out the season 0-5, return to Civic Field today for a home three-game series with Wenatchee. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
