WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties pitchers struggle against Riverhawks

EDMONTON, Alberta — The Port Angeles pitching, which has been generally solid all season, struggled in the Lefties’ finale against Edmonton, giving up 20 hits, eight of them extra-base hits, in a 16-3 loss.

It was a rough road trip to Alberta, with a flight out of Victoria, B.C., canceled, which caused some of the players to show up at the ballpark an hour before the first pitch Saturday. On Sunday, the Lefties lost 3-2 on a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning before Monday’s rough outing.

The Lefties actually got off to a good start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning as their top three hitters Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino), Roberto Garza-Nunez (Embry-Riddle) and Jason Leon (Cal State, Bakersfield) all hit singles. Giesegh came in to score on a single and Garza-Nunez came in to score on a sac fly RBI from Jack Kleveno (Utah).

But, Edmonton responded by scoring five runs in the first and five more in the second to take command.

Kole Acker (Port Angeles High School) did pitch three scoreless innings, finishing with four innings pitched and three earned runs.

Garza-Nunez finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Kosei Suzuki (Frank Phillips College) was 2-for-5. Leon and Ethan Kodama (California, Berkeley) each had RBIs.

The Lefties (5-19) had Tuesday off for a travel day, then return home to take on the Nanaimo Night Owls (11-13) at 6:35 p.m. today. The Lefties play a special 1:35 p.m. matinee on the Fourth of July holiday Thursday.
