WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties’ Nick Oakley named to WCL second team

Shortstop hit .290 with 5 HRs, 21 RBIs, 10 steals

PORTLAND, Ore. — Port Angeles Lefty Nick Oakley was named to the West Coast League’s second team Wednesday.

Oakley, who played shortstop for the Lefties much of the season and was a fan favorite, had an outstanding year. He largely hit leadoff, combining power with speed. He batted .290 with five home runs and four doubles in 37 games. He drove in 21 runs and scored 22 runs. He also had 10 stolen bases. He led the Lefties in hits (40) and runs.

Oakley is a sophomore at UC Santa Barbara.

Also making the All-WCL Honorable Mention team was Lefties pitcher Zach Thomas. Thomas was used primarily as a closer. He went 2-2 with an ERA of 2.27. He had five saves in 19 games, pitching 31.2 innings, striking out 29 and walking 11.

Thomas attends Dixie State in Utah.

Travis Bazzana of Oregon State was named the WCL’s MVP. Bazzana played for Corvallis. Bazzana hit .429 with 81 hits, 46 runs and 18 doubles for the Knights.

Eric Chavarria of Bellingham was named the WCL Pitcher of the Year. Chavarria, a Lewis-Clark State College student-athlete, had an ERA of 1.84 in 11 games and nine starts for the Bells. He beat the Lefties twice, with a shutout on June 15.

The Ridgefield Raptors led the all-WCL first team with four selections. Corvallis and Portland each had three players on the first team.
