WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties can’t find strike zone in 13-2 loss to Bend

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties got a solid start from pitcher Reid Rasmussen (Central Washington), but then the Lefties’ bullpen struggled to find the strike zone, giving up 11 walks in the fifth and sixth innings as the Bend Elks went on to win 13-2 despite only collecting four hits.

Port Angeles pitchers gave up a total of 14 walks, including eight in the fifth inning. They also hit six batters.

Bend scored eight runs in the fifth inning on only one hit. They got three more in the sixth on a Jake Hoskins home run after a walk and a hit batsman.

Rasmussen went four innings to start the game, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out six Bend batters. Port Angeles was up 1-0 when he left the game with the Lefties scoring a run on an Owen Alsup (West Texas A&M) solo home run. The Lefties scored a run in the ninth inning when the Elks got wild themselves, giving up two walks, a hit batsman and a wild pitch in the inning.

The Lefties (10-26, 2-7 second half) have today off and then host the Kamloops Northpaws at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday for a three-game series.

Saturday’s game

The Port Angeles Lefties got up early on the Bend Elks on Saturday, but they couldn’t hold the lead in the late innings and lost 10-8.

It was the second straight game that the Lefties lost by the identical score of 10-8. And for the second straight game, it was Bend’s Avery Ortiz doing much of the damage. Ortiz hit a grand slam Friday night and he hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to give the Elks the lead.

Isiah Walz (Concordia College), who has been red hot since he joined the Lefties last week, was 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and an RBI. Chanz Doughty (Edmonds Community College) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Roberto Nunez (Embry-Riddle) had a hit, a run scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Chase Taylor had a hit, a run scored and two stolen bases.

Garrett Holpuch (Centralia College) started, going four innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk. He struck out five. Reliever CJ Lewis (Jackson State) took the loss. Brock Mayer (Chaffey College) pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
