WEST COAST LEAGUE: Lefties’ 9th-inning rally comes up short

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles Lefties had a chance to make a game of it with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but they were only able to push across one run on a sac fly in a 5-2 loss to Wenatchee.

The game was a great pitchers’ duel with starter Dillon Carrell (Wisconsin-River Falls) battling three AppleSox pitchers. The game was tied 0-0 entering the fifth inning when Wenatchee finally broke though for three runs on three singles, a double and a walk. Carrell ended up going 4⅔ innings, allowing five hits, three walks and three earned runs. He struck out two.

The Lefties got one run back when WCL All-Star Tommy Markey (Fordham) singled and eventually came around to score on a sac fly by Tyler Shulman (Harvard).

The AppleSox added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the inning. With no outs, Shulman walked, Jack Edmunds (Brown) hit a single and Dom Dominguez (Cal State, San Bernardino) loaded the bases with a single, giving the Lefties a golden opportunity for a big inning with the winning run at the plate and still no outs.

The AppleSox were able to get Danny Porras (Gig Harbor) out on a shallow fly, then Jeremy Giesegh (Cal State, San Bernardino) hit a deep fly for a sac fly to make it 5-2. Wenatchee got out of the jam with another fly ball by Eddie Alfaro (Riverside CC).

Kayne Jinks (Tennessee Tech) pitched four innings, allowing four hits, three walks and one earned run. He struck out one.

Dominguez and Porras each finished 2-for-4 with one of Porras’ hits a double.

The Lefties (6-13 second half, 17-29 overall) played the AppleSox (10-9 second half, 26-20) on Tuesday after press deadline, then wrap up their series with Wenatchee at 6:35 today at Civic Field. They have a rare Thursday off.
