WEST COAST LEAGUE BASEBALL: Lefties lose season-opener to Springfield on a ninth-inning walkoff

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — The Port Angeles Lefties got good pitching performances from their staff, but fell 4-3 in their season opener on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning in their first game against the Springfield Drifters.

The Lefties staff of Jack O’Brien (Hawaii Pacific), Dom Pieto (Long Island University), Drew Standen (New Jersey Institute of Technology) and Brock Mayer (Chaffey College, Calif.), allowed just seven hits while striking out 13.

Standen, who struck out six in 2â…” innings, allowed one earned run, one hit and two walks. It was his baserunner who came in to score, so he was the hard-luck loser.

Springfield allowed just five Lefties hits and shut out the Port Angeles club in eight out of nine innings as both staffs dominated the game.

Port Angeles scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, all with two outs. Jacob Pipercic (St. Elizabeth University) walked, then Zach Kim (Chaffey College) hit a two-out double to put runners at second and third.

Springfield made a two-run error on a grounder by Reagan Guthrie (Regis University), scoring both Pipercic and Kim. Guthrie moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single by Sam Adams (Stephen A. Austin).

Kim finished the game 2-for-4, while Adams also hit 2-for-4. Jacob Billings (Chaffey College), had the Lefties’ other hit.

O’Brien started the game, going three innings and allowed two earned runs and two walks while striking out two. Pieto pitched three innings, allowing a hit and four walks while striking out five. Mayer pitched to one batter in the bottom of the ninth and gave up a single.

The Lefties (0-1) play the Drifters (1-0) again at 6:30 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Sunday.
