POULSBO — Sequim had to battle against two opponents in an Olympic League volleyball match Tuesday night, rival North Kitsap and a referee unwilling to make calls against the Vikings in a 25-11, 18-25, 25-15, 25-27, 10-15 five-set loss.
“The biggest part was I feel really bad for my girls,” coach Jennie Webber Heilman said. “We’ve been working really hard in practice and putting together a gameplan for NK, and the refs did not make even one ball-handling call on them in five games, and there was some pretty blatant violations.”
Ball handling violations include double contact, when the ball is hit twice in succession or the ball contacts different parts of the body at separate times, or when the ball is caught, thrown or carried.
“There was one play where an NK girl caught it then hit,” Webber Heilman said. “It was so obvious the crowd was calling it out, but no call was made. It got to the point I asked our captain to talk to the up official and ask them to watch the net.”
Webber Heilman said the Wolves continued to play hard.
Those fourth-set struggles let North Kitsap back into the match.
“Kassi Montero served the first six points for us in game five, but then we allowed them right back in it,” Webber Heilman said. “They were in a better offensive rotation at that time than we were.”
Rose Gibson led Sequim at the service line, going 19-for-19 with four aces, five perfect passes, eight kills and 14 digs.
Ashton Reichner also went 100 percent at the line, 11-of-11 with three aces.
Freshman Jordyn Julmist played well offensively and defensively, going 6-of-7 with an ace, 15 kills and 15 digs.
Montero was 23-of-24 at the line with five aces, five kills, a block and 22 digs.
Brianna Palenik had five kills and Kenzi Berglund went 20-for-23 with two aces, three kills, a block, 18 digs and 31 assists.
The Wolves (4-2, 5-3) host Bremerton tonight.

BREMERTON — The Roughriders got into a good flow on both sides of the net in a 25-15, 25-21, 25-17 sweep of the Knights on the road Tuesday.
“The game went well,” coach Alyssa Wetzler said. “Our attackers are continuing to make smart plays at the net, we are running quicker attacks and even some slides (a hard-to-block attack).
“Defensively we’ve been calm, collected and controlled, which allows the rest of the court to flow. Again, I’m excited for our future matchups.”
Senior Shyanne Hunter led Port Angeles with five kills and a pair of digs, while serving 14-of-16 with three aces.
Sophomore Juno Rognlien went 9-of-10 on serves with an ace, three kills and seven digs.
Juniors Hailey Castor and Jordin Dunaway also contributed with Castor serving 100 percent with 12 assists and four digs and Dunaway turning in four kills. three digs and a pair of aces.
Port Angeles (2-2, 2-3) hosts Kingston (3-3, 4-5) tonight.
