SPOKANE — Washington State coach Paul Wulff may be out after the Washington Huskies destroyed the Cougars in the Apple Cup game Saturday night.
Athletic director Bill Moos says he’ll make a decision on Wulff’s future within 24 hours.
On his weekly radio show this morning in Spokane, Moos said he will make a decision by Tuesday at the latest on whether to keep Wulff for a fifth season or move in a different direction.
Wulff is 9-40 in his four seasons in charge at Washington State, including a 4-8 campaign this season that doubled the Cougars’ win total from 2010 but still failed to quiet critics. Moos said he has to decide if “staying the course” is the right decision to energize the Cougars fan base.
The Seattle Times reported on its website Sunday that Wulff would be out as Washington State coach barring a last-minute change, citing unnamed sources.
It also reported that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is in line for the job.
Wulff has a 9-40 record in four years, a .184 winning percentage that is worst in school history.
Washington on Saturday night pulled away from rival Washington State 38-21 to win the 104th Apple Cup.
Washington State rallied from the early 14-point deficit, but the loss will only increase the speculation about Wulff’s future.
He has one year remaining on his contract.
