UPDATED — COLLEGE SOCCER: Peninsula College men and women both advance to NWAACC championship games

TUKWILA — The Peninsula College men also will play for the NWAACC championship after beating Walla Walla 2-0 Saturday night in the semifinal match.

The Peninsula women also beat Walla Walla 2-0 earlier Saturday.

The top-ranked Pirates will play second-ranked Clark in the men’s title game.

Peninsula will be going for its third NWAACC championship in four years and second in a row.

Ash Apollon scored on a beautiful strike in the 22nd minute to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead over Walla Walla.

That was the only goal Peninsula needed, but it added another goal in stoppage time when Victor Sanchez kicked the ball from near midfield after Walla Walla’s goalkeeper Derek Carver left the goal unattended.

Peninsula keeper Angel Guerra earned the shutout, his 11th of the season.

Clark beat Highline 2-1 when Bernardino Ayala-Jimenez scored in the 98th minute.

The PIrates defeated the Penguins 2-0 last month.

The women’s match begins at 3 p.m., and the men play at 5:30 p.m.

TUKWILA — The Peninsula College women’s soccer team scored two early goals and then held on to beat Walla Wall 2-0 in the NWAACC semifinals at Starfire Sports Complex.

The Pirates scored their first goal in the 14th minute after advancing the ball down the field quickly following a defensive stop.

Bronte Fitzsimmons set up Dominique Niedziela to give Peninsula a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later, Fitzsimmons scored a goal of her own off a pass from Bri Afoa.

The Pirates will play Edmonds for the NWAACC championship Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Tritons defeated Clackamas earlier Saturday. Port Townsend graduate Irina Lyons scored Edmonds’ first goal.

The Peninsula College men play Walla Walla in the men’s semifinal at 6 p.m.
