POULSBO — Sequim junior Waverly Shreffler broke a meet record at the Li’l Norway Invitational at North Kitsap.
Shreffler ran the girls 800-meter in 2 minutes, 21.95 seconds to exceed the previous record, set last year by Central Kitsap’s Sophie Carroll, by more than 2 seconds.
Shreffler also moves to the top of the North Olympic Peninsula season rankings in the 800, surpassing Port Angeles’ Gracie Long, who set the previous record Thursday.
Another Sequim junior, Oscar Herrera, won both boys hurdle events Saturday. His times in the 110-meter hurdles (16.08 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (41.72 seconds) are the second-best marks in the Li’l Norway Invite’s five-year history.
The Sequim boys tied for sixth at the 15-team invite with 53 points, while Port Townsend (31 points) tied for eighth and Clallam Bay was 15th (nine points).
Central Kitsap was the boys winner with 156 points.
The Sequim girls placed eighth (39 points), Clallam Bay was 11th (25.5) and Port Townsend finished 15th (eight).
The North Kitsap girls defended their home track by taking first with 172 points.
Heidi Vereide was the runner-up in the long jump for the Wolves and ran with the second-place 4×400-meter relay along with Shreffler, Gretchen Happe and Audrey Shingleton. The foursome ran the relay in a Peninsula season-best 4:15.41.
Happe also placed fifth in the 200-meter and Cheryl Armstrong was fourth in the shot put for the Sequim girls.
Clallam Bay’s Molly McCoy placed fifth in the girls long jump. She also placed sixth in the 300 hurdles with an area-best time of 54.98 seconds.
The Port Townsend girls’ top showing was by Emily Franklin, who placed sixth in the 100 hurdles.
Shenoa Snyder was seventh in the shot put for the Redhawks and Hanna Trailer took ninth in the 1,600.
Outside of Herrera, Alex Barry had the best finish for the Sequim boys.
Barry, who finished third at the Class 2A state meet in the javelin last year, took second in the event at Saturday’s meet, falling to the 2014 Class 3A state runner-up Hudson Keffer of Central Kitsap.
Barry’s distance of 173 feet, 5 inches is the top javelin mark on the Peninsula this season.
Barry and Herrera also helped the Wolves place third in the 4×400 relay, along with Kane Stoddard and Logan Habner, with an area-best time of 3:37.12.
Other top-five finishers for Sequim were Rickey Gross, third in the pole vault; Habner, fourth in the triple jump; and Stoddard, fourth in the 100.
Isaiah Mason took fourth in the long jump for the Port Townsend boys with an area-best 19-07.25. Teammate Seren Dances took seventh in the event.
Koby Weidner was part of a pair of top-fives for the Redhawks, taking fifth in the 200 and in the 4×100 relay, which he ran with Alex Brown, Zach Wilson and Dances.
Eighth-grader Clayton Willis had the only top-five for the Clallam Bay boys with a fourth-place finish in the high jump.
Willis also took seventh in the 200 and eighth in the 100.
