POULSBO — The Sequim girls third-place finish led the four North Olympic Peninsula schools competing at the 11-team Olympic League All-Division Championship at North Kitsap High School.
The event serves as a warmup for those qualified for Saturday’s Class 1A sub-district meet in Port Townsend and 2A meet in Bremerton, as well as offering a last chance to qualify for the 2A meet.
Waverly Shreffler was the lone Wolves athlete to win an individual event in the girls meet Saturday.
Shreffler won the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 21.33 seconds.
She teamed with Gretchen Happe, Kiara Pierson and Audrey Shingleton in winning the 4×400 relay in 4:12.03.
The Port Angeles girls were fifth, led by two long-distance wins by Gracie Long.
Long won the 1,600 with a time of 5:28.07 and the 3,200 in 12:40.34.
Oscar Herrera won both hurdles events to lead the Sequim boys to fourth place.
Herrera held little back, setting a new personal record in the 300 hurdles (38.63 seconds), and taking the 110 hurdles in 14.84 seconds.
Caleb West was the lone boys winner for Port Angeles, which finished fifth as a team.
West won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet, 1.5 inches.
The top 16 times and distances in each event advanced to the Olympic League 2A sub-district meet at Bremerton High School on Saturday.
The event was less important for 1A Port Townsend and Chimacum.
“This week’s meet is kind of an odd one for the 1A schools,” Redhawks coach Ian Fraser said.
“For us, this meet is not used to determine league champions, neither team nor individual, and has no qualifying implications for our athletes.
Fraser said the week of training leading to the event was light as his team rested many athletes.
Port Townsend’s top performance came from freshman Aubry Botkin. Botkin won the girls 100 hurdles with a time of 15.56 seconds.
Botkin trimmed two-tenths of a second off her personal best to edge out Kingston’s Taylor Seaman, a third-place finisher at the 2A state meet last year.
“Aubry’s work on posture and rhythm endurance paid off though, as she did a better job of keeping her hips tall than she had previously, and pushed aggressively through all ten hurdles to take the lead late in the race,” Fraser said.
Koby Weidner had the best performance for the Redhawks boys team.
He set a new personal best with a third-place finish in the 100 in 11.27.
Chimacum’s best performances came from Sam Golden and Trevon Noel.
Golden was second in the boys 300 hurdles (42.50 seconds), while Noel was runner-up in the discus with a throw of 139-05.
Chimacum and Port Townsend will compete in the Olympic League 1A sub-district meet at Blue Heron Middle School on Saturday.
