BREMERTON — The Port Angeles boys and girls both won as teams at a six-school meet at Olympic High School.
The girls piled up 12 first-place finishes in Thursday’s meet with Klahowya, Olympic, Clallam Bay, Crescent and Forks, including a sweep of all three relay races and all three distance races, to rack up 90.5 team points to Klahowya’s second-place 43.
The Roughrider boys had four first-place finishes and six second-place finishes to tally 54 team points, getting past Olympic, which had 49. Forks was fourth with 20.5 team points.
Lauren Larson won two events for the girls, picking up a personal-best in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:22.50 (fifth-fastest in the state). She also won the 800 meters in 2:28.20.
“When Lauren decides on a pace and wants to [personal record], it doesn’t seem to matter if the wind is blowing, rain is falling, or what the temperature is … she charges ahead,” said Riders coach Rodger Johnson.
Mckenzie Musalek had a great meet for the Riders, winning four individual and relay events. Johnson said she had some nagging injuries last season that held her back.
“I’m happy to be healthy and able to go 100 percent this year,” Musalek said.
Musalek won the 200-meter run with a time of 27.71 and the pole vault with a height of 9 feet.
The Riders’ 4×100 team (Millie Long, Musalek, Samille Stensgard and Eve Burke) won with a time of 52.16; the 4×200 team (Catherine Brown, Jayde Gedelman, Stensgard and Kia Noel) won with a time of 2:01.54 and the 4×400 (Kennedy Bruch, Kynzie DeLeon, Musalek and Long) won with a time of 4:25.97.
Long and Stensgard each won three total relay and invidual events.
Other girls’ winners for the Riders include:
• 100-meter hurdles — Long, 17.13.
• 1,600 meters — DeLeon, 5:32.70.
• 400 meters — Bruch, 1:05.11
• Shot put — Myra Walker, 30 feet-4 inches.
• Javelin — Stensgard, 108-4, a personal record.
For the boys, the Riders’ Darrell Duckett won the shot put with a distance of 45-0, a personal record, edging out Forks’ Luke Dahlgren, who had a personal-record put of 43-7.
The Riders’ Grady Bourm and Liam Clark tied for first in the high jump at 5-8, while Clark won the long jump with a distance of 20-4½. Teammate Nolan Hughes won the triple jump with a distance of 36-0.
Dahlgren won the discus for Forks, with a personal-record distance of 152-4, winning that event by nearly 36 feet (over his Spartans’ teammate Skyler Steffen, at 116-9). That is the third-best discus distance among 1A boys statewide this year.
Sequim at North Kitsap
POULSBO — The Sequim boys swept a dual meet against North Kitsap and North Mason while the Wolves’ girls topped the Bulldogs at North Kitsap on Thursday.
“Strong head winds kept the group from recording great times, but the competitive performances were very good,” Wolves coach Bradley Moore said.
Sequim’s boys moved to 6-0 on the season, having won every meet they have attended thus far. The Wolves edged the Vikings 78-67 and beat North Mason 88-53.
Darren Salazar, Murray Bingham and Riley Cowan all won two individual events for Sequim.
Salazar ran the 100 meters in 11.88 seconds and set a personal record in winning the 400 in 55.01, just ahead of freshman teammate Henry Hughes (55.7).
Bingham won the 800 (2:02.61) and the 1,600 (4:35.08).
Cowan set a personal record in the shot put (44 feet, 7 inches) and threw the javelin 155-7 to win that event..
Salazar and Bingham teamed with Logan Laxson to win the 4×400 in 3:34.72.
Other winners for Sequim were Laxson with a season-best 200 time of 24.14 and Fischer Jensen in the 300 hurdles (41.53).
Moore said the Wolves girls are also performing well and have a solid 6-2 record.
For the girls, Riley Pyeatt and Abby Schroeder each won two events.
Pyeatt won the 100 meters at 13.78 and the 400 at 1:00.74. She also finished second in the 200 at 27.70.
Schroeder also won the 300-meter hurdles at 52.75 and the high jump at 5-0.
Elizabeth Sweet also won the pole vault at 9-6.
Sequim outpointed North Mason 75-44 but fell 100-45 to North Kitsap.
