BELFAIR — After the first day of the bidistrict track and field championships, the Port Angeles boys sit in sixth place with most of the events still to be held Saturday afternoon and evening.
So far, 13 Port Angeles and Sequim boys and girls have qualified for the state 2A track and field championships which will be held next weekend at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
The top finishes from Friday’s early events include a third place by Port Angeles’ Donovan Heins in the long jump. He leaped a distance of 21 feet, 7½ inches. Sequim’s Ahrya Klinger came in third in the girls pole vault with a height of 8-6. Both athletes move on to state.
Port Angeles’ Parker Nickerson was fourth in the long jump with a distance of 20-8¾. His teammate Dallas Dunning was fourth in the high jump at 5-8 and Sean Southard of Sequim was fourth in the javelin with a personal-record throw of 158-6.
Other boys qualifying for state include Port Angeles’ Jason Hawes in the 400. He finished fifth in a personal-record time of 51.46 to finish fifth. Nickerson was sixth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.02. He has yet to run his best event, the 300 hurdles.
Sequim qualified several girls on the first day of the meet.
Ivy Barrett was fifth in the 400 in a time of 1:01.69, while Dawn Hulstedt was fifth in the 1,600 in a personal-record time of 5:22.42. Both Sequim girls move on to state.
The Sequim 4×200 relay team of Kaitlyn Bloomenrader, Bailey Stein, Bridget Pyeatt and Barrett came in fifth in a time of 1:50.27, good for state.
So far, Faerin Tait is the lone Port Angeles girl qualifying for state. She finished sixth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.25 seconds, a personal record.
Largely because of their strength in the jumping events, the Port Angeles boys sit in sixth place after one day with 29 points. Renton leads with 49 points. The Sequim girls are 10th ot of 19 schools with 16.5 points. Foster leads the girls with 46.5 points.
The state 2A track and field meet begins Thursday.
Forks track at district
CHEHALIS — The Forks track and field team will send nine athletes to the state 2B championships next weekend in Yakima after their performances this weekend at the District 4 championships at W.F. West High School.
The best Spartans’ showing was by Nate Dahlgren, who finished second in the shot put with a distance of 46 feet, 63/4. He also qualified for state in the javelin with a throw of 144-4, good for fourth place.
Gage Willenbrink finished second in the high jump with a height of 5-6, also qualifying him for state.
Sloan Tumaua was fifth in the discus with a throw of 140-2, while Noah Foster was fifth in the 400 meters in apersonal-record time of 52.67 seconds. They will both go to state.
The best showing for the Forks girls was by Keana Rowley in the javelin. She came in third with a personal-record throw of 104-11.
The Spartans’ 4×200 girls relay team (Moli Luong, Caitlynn Cooney, Kendall Marshall and Natalie Horejsi) qualified for state, coming in fifth place with a time of 1:56.63.
The 2B state track and field meet begins Thursday at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.
