BREMERTON — The Sequim boys’ and girls’ track teams qualified individuals and relay teams in 26 events to the 2A West Central District 3 Meet next week, while the Port Angeles track teams qualified in 21 events.
The Port Angeles girls finished second at the Olympic 2A Sub-District qualifying meet Saturday, while the Sequim boys finished third. The Port Angeles boys and Sequim girls each came in fifth. The North Kitsap boys and girls won both team titles.
Port Angeles’ Gracie Long won two events — the 1,600 and 3,200 meters — while Sequim’s Murray Bingham won the 800 meters and 1,600 meters, beating his teammate Alec Shingleton by less than two seconds in the 800. Murray’s sister, Morgan Bingham, finished second to Long in both the 1,600 and 3,200.
The two wins were Long’s 21st and 22nd first-place finishes this season individually and as a relay team member. Meanwhile, Murray Bingham racked up his 13th and 14th first-place finishes of the year.
Other winners include Sequim’s Riley Martin in the 300-meter hurdles, Sequim’s Riley Cowan in the javelin and Sequim’s Elizabeth Sweet in the pole vault.
Port Angeles’ Delaney Wenzl also set a school record for a freshman in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing in 49.55 seconds, good for second place and a District berth.
Relay teams qualifying for District include both the Sequim 4×100 — Curtis Gorr, Keyshawn Whitney, Michael Mattern-Hall and Cowan — that finished second and the Sequim 4×400 — Gorr, Mattern-Hall, Alec Shingleton and Murray Bingham — that finished fourth.
Among the girls, Sequim’s 4×100 team — Daisy Ryan, Rylee Gray, Emma Beeson and Hilary Holtrop — finished second, earning a trip to District, while the Port Angeles 4×100 team — Alexis Cobb, Kia Noel, Michelle Alvarez and Mckenzie Musalek — finished fourth, earning a berth.
The Port Angeles girls’ strength has been in the distance events and the Riders qualified for districts in eight slots in the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200 meter runs. Long qualified by winning her two events. Kynzie DeLeon qualified in the 800 and 3,200, while Maddie Dougherty qualfiied in the 800 and 1,600 and Lael Butler qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200.
The Sequim girls’ 4×200 team (Ryan, Kristinna Barnet, Beeson and Telicia Busby) finished third, while the Port Angeles 4×200 squad (Musalek, Noel, Alvarez and Wenzl) finished fourth. Both relay teams will go to District.
The Sequim girls 4×400 team (Barnet, Ryan, Beeson and Morgan Bingham) finished third and the Port Angeles 4×400 team (Wenzl, Ellie Hiigel, Long and Kynzie DeLeon) finished fourth, good for District.
The top five finishers in each event qualified for the West Central District meet, which will be held at Renton Memorial Stadium Friday and Saturday. Olympic League qualifiers will compete with qualifiers from the South Puget Sound League and the Seamount League for the chance to go to the 2A state meet May 25-27 at Mount Tahoma.
