VASHON ISLAND — With a big second day at the Nisqually 1A District track and field meet, the East Jefferson girls got four first-place finishes to come in a solid third place as a team while the Rivals boys finished fourth.
The Nisqually District meet was held Saturday and Tuesday at Vashon High School with most of the finals Tuesday.
The East Jefferson girls dominated the distance events. Aaliyah Cassidy Yearian won the 800-meter run in a season-record time of 2 minutes, 18.59 seconds. She also won the 1,600 in a time of 5:12.89.
Fiona Fraser won the 3,200 in a time of 11:21.70, winning by a huge gap of 48 seconds, and came in second behind her teammate Yearian in the 1,600 in a time of 5:16.24.
Ellise Gardner had already won the javelin Saturday with a throw of 113 feet, 6 inches.
Arden Moore earned points for the Rivals by coming in second in the 300 hurdles with a personal-record time of 47.78.
The East Jefferson 4×100 team (Sienna Emerson, Moore, Carina Shiflett and Clara Camp) finished third in a time of 52.18, and Kaida Rodrigues was third in the triple jump with a personal-record distance of 33-4½.
The East Jefferson girls are likely to get several placements at state as Yearian has top-three times statewide in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, while Fraser is fourth in the state in the 3,200 and eighth in the 1,600. Gardner and Moore also have top-10 distances and times in their events. Yearian finished second in the state last year in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. 1A is a tough classification to qualify for state. The top two finishers in each event move on to the state meet, so the Rivals get four girls — Yearian, Fraser, Gardner and Moore — to state.
The girls finished with 161 points. Bellevue Christian won the district with 205 points while Vashon had 181.
Soare Johnston was the big winner for the Rivals boys, taking first in the 3,200 in a season-record time of 9:59.8. Coming in a close second in the same event was Indigo Gould with a time of 10:01.63.
Henri Huber had a successful district meet with a second-place finish in the triple jump at 38-4½. Reid Martin was third in the javelin at 148-1. Johnston, Gould and Huber qualified for state.
The boys tallied 92 points, tied with Charles Wright for fourth. Bellevue Christian won the boys meet with 238 points, while Cascade Christian had 149 and Klahowya 95.
The state 1A track and field meet will be held May 23-25 at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.
