TRACK AND FIELD: East Jefferson girls claim first Nisqually League meet

Boys just behind Klahowya for second

SILVERDALE — East Jefferson nearly pulled off a boys and girls sweep at the first Class 1A Nisqually League meet of the spring season at Klahowya Secondary School on Wednesday.

The Rivals girls dusted the competition to earn first place with 69 total points, far ahead of second-place Cascade Christian (31), while the East Jefferson boys were edged out 50-44 for the boys team victory by Klahowya.

Addy Asbell had a busy day for the Rivals’ girls, winning the shot put with a personal-record throw of 27 feet, 11 inches and the high jump (4 feet, 2 inches). Asbell also tied for second in the long jump with teammate Lia Poore (14-9¾) and was third in the 100-meter dash in 14.11.

Asbell also was a member of East Jefferson’s winning 4×100 relay team, joining with her sister Aurin Asbell and Stephanie Sanchez and Kay Botkin in the 4×100 (54.99).

The Rivals also claimed the 4×400 relay with Camryn Hines, Tadu Dollarhide, Ava Vaughn-Mifsud and Melody Douglas (4:50.07).

Elise Gardener also had a big day in the throwing events, winning the discus with a throw of 82-4 and coming in second in the javelin (88-0) and shot put (25-10½).

Sprinter Jerome Reaux Jr. and thrower Tusker Behrenfeld were multiple event winners for the Rivals’ boys.

Reaux Jr. won the 100 in 12.14 seconds and the 200 in 25.04.

Behrenfeld notched an impressive 160 feet, 4 inches to claim the javelin contest by 36 feet and hit the distance of 118-9 to win the discus.

East Jefferson will host the second Nisqually League meet at Blue Heron Middle School on Tuesday.
