SWIMMING: Sequim, Port Angeles swimmers ready for state meet

Sequim and Port Angeles swimmers will compete in at least 12 events at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Swim and Dive championships Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, with word of more wild card allocations still pending.

The top seven finishers in each event from the WCD III 2A meet last weekend move on to state.

For Sequim that means two relay teams and Kaleb Needoba in two individual events.

Needoba will swim in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. He finished sixth in both events at district.

Sequim’s 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay also qualified for state. Both teams are manned by Zen Graham, Myles Tadlock, Jesse Bobst and Needoba. The Wolves’ 200 freestyle finished fourth while their 400 freestyle finished seventh.

Sequim did not pick up any wild card allocations, said coach Britt Hemphill.

Port Angeles will send two relay teams and at least six individuals.

Qualifying for state was Josh Gavin, who had a solid district meet with a third-place finish in the 500 freestyle and fifth in the 200 individual medley.

Taylor Martin was fourth in the 100 backstroke, qualifying for state, while Alex Hertzog was fifth in the same event. Josh Krzysiak also qualified for state with seventh-place district finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle.

Riders’ swimmer Adam Boyd will also be going to state according to coach Pete VanRossen. Martin might possibly be invited to state in the 200 freestyle as a wild card. Martin was ninth at district in the 200 freestyle.
