SUMMER HOOPS: Roughrider varsity, JV win home tournament

PORT ANGELES — The Roughriders varsity and junior varsity basketball teams completed their summer seasons with championships at the Port Angeles Roughriders Summer Classic tournament.

The Port Angeles varsity beat the Forks varsity 55-35 in the championship game, while the Roughriders JV beat the Kingston JV 62-34.

Kyle Benedict scored 18 in the win, while Payton Schmidt added 16 and Gabe Long 15.

The Forks varsity beat the Port Angeles 2 team 50-40 and 62-42, and beat Bremerton 46-36 en route to the title game.

The Roughriders went 4-1 at the tournament, with the only loss to the Port Angeles Alumni team 73-70 on Saturday night. The Roughriders Alumni team features three players — Grayson Peet, Luke Angevine and Lambros Rogers — that play college basketball.

The summer basketball season ends on July 31. The Roughriders went 31-9 during the summer season, winning tournaments in Yakima and Port Angeles and playing in the championship games in two other tournaments, losing both times to Lynden Christian, the defending 1A state champion. Lynden Christian will play the Roughriders again in Port Angeles on November 29.

Coach Kasey Ulin said he’s also happy that 38 kids came out to play in the Roughriders’ four summer teams.

“The program is doing well. I’m excited about the direction we’re going in,” he said.

Last year, the Roughriders went 9-3 in the Olympic League 2A Division and finished third and went 15-9 overall, winning two games at the District III West-Central 2A tournament. They only graduated three kids off of last year’s team.
