YAKIMA — Quilcene made it to the Class 1B Volleyball semifinals at the Yakima SunDome on Saturday, but was held off by Pomeroy 3-0 for the Rangers’ first loss of the year.
Pomerey won 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 and played for the state championship against Oakesdale Saturday evening. The Rangers played a match for third place at State Saturday evening against Almira-Coulee-Hartline. The results were after press deadline, but the Rangers will do no worse than fourth at state.
The Rangers (22-1) started off the tournament Friday morning by beating Odessa-Harrington 3-1 (25-9, 17-25, 25-9, 25-17). Friday evening, they came back in the second round to beat Sunnyside Christian 3-1 (25-20, 25-14, 19-25, 25-18) to qualify for Saturday’s semifinal.
Bay teams eliminated
Two other North Peninsula teams, Neah Bay and Clallam Bay, also played at the State 1B Tournament. Both teams were eliminated after two losses. Neah Bay was beaten by Oakesdale (25-12, 25-7, 25-3) Friday morning. Oakesdale is playing for the state championship, so this was a very strong team. The Red Devils had a better showing in the afternoon, losing to Valley Christian 25-22, 25-19, 26-24.
Clallam Bay had a very tough loss to Evergreen Lutheran, taking the Eagles to five sets before finally falling 3-2 (25-11, 24-26, 16-25, 25-17, 15-6). The Bruins in their second state match in the afternoon lost to Naselle 3-0, but this was actually another very close match with a score of 25-22, 25-21, 25-23.
Sequim at Class 2A tournament
LACEY — Sequim won one of three matches at the State 2A Tournament this weekend. The Wolves got off to a slow start in their first match against Archbishop Murphy but then got stronger later in the match, losing 3-0 by a score of 25-3, 25-17, 25-23,
The Wolves bounced back Friday afternoon, beating Orting 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 20-25, 25-23) to qualify for a second day at state and a chance to play for seventh or eighth place. But Sequim lost its third match at state 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 25-10) to Fife on Saturday.
