TACOMA — One down, three more to go? That’s the possibility that could be realized in the wake of Sequim freshman Clare Turella’s title-winning performance in the high jump at the Class 2A State Track and Field Championships on Thursday evening.
Turella cleared 5-feet, 2-inches to win the championship by 2 inches over Woodland junior Addy Siemer and West Valley of Spokane senior McKenzie Sargent.
Sargent came into the state meet with the No. 1 jump in the state at 5-4 with Turella right behind after winning the Bi-District Championship last weekend with a jump of 5’3.
Turella sits third in Sequim’s all-time high jump records behind Jolene Vaara who cleared 5’4 as a sophomore in 2022 and Haleigh Harrison, a three-sport star for the Wolves who eventually played volleyball for Western Washington, who jumped 5-5 as a sophomore in 2011.
Turella also made the Sequim varsity soccer team and the Wolves’ varsity basketball program in her first high school season.
Turella’s victory put the Wolves into a tie for first place in the 2A girls team standings with Lynden — albeit temporarily.
Sequim’s Dawn Hulstedt finished 12th in the girls 1,600 in 5:26.18.
Port Angeles sophomore Faerin Tait advanced to the girls 100-meter hurdles final late Friday after finishing third in her heat and eighth overall in 16.64 seconds, behind top qualifier Rochelle Jeffries of Foster (15.4).
Parker Nickerson placed 17th in the 110 hurdles preliminaries in 16.87 for the Roughrider boys.
The 2A state meet continues through this evening in Tacoma.
Yearian takes third
East Jefferson fared well in the girls 1,600 run at the Class 1A meet at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima as Port Townsend seniors Aaliyah Yearian ended up third in 5:05.08 and Fiona Fraser was seventh with a time of 5:14.54.
East Jefferson freshman Arden Moore ended up seventh in the girls 300 hurdles with a time of 47.44 at the Class 1A meet at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.
East Jefferson senior Henri Huber was 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 39-05.25.
Personal records
Neah Bay’s Ryana Moss placed seventh in the girls 1,600 and set a new personal record in her last run (5:41.45) and finished ninth in the 300 hurdles in 52.52.
Younger sister Caylee Moss was 10th in the 1,600 with her own best time of 5:49.82.
Red Devils sophomore Daniel Cumming earned a top-10 finish in the shot put with a throw of 40-07.
The Class 1B, 2B and 1A championships continue through this evening in Yakima.
