STATE TRACK: Port Townsend’s Dances win 110, 300 hurdles

CHENEY — Port Townsend’s Seren Dances is the boys’ state 1A champion in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.

Dances had the fastest 110-meter hurdle time at the 1A level going into the state meet at Eastern Washington University. He won the state championship in the finals with a time of 15.42, beating Jeremy Scott of La Center by 0.33 of a second to win the title in the finals. Dances followed that up by winning the 300-meter hurdles in 39.30 seconds, .74 of a second faster than Scott. Dances saved his best effort for when it counted, as that was a personal best by nearly a second.

Dances also came in second in the triple jump with an effort of 44 feet, 9 3/4 inches. That was within two feet of the winning jump made by Ryan Slack of Zillah.

Thanks largely to Dances’ showing, the Port Townsend boys were in third place as a team Saturday with 41 team points, not far behind first-place King’s 53.

Final team results were posted after press deadline Saturday.

Dances’ Port Townsend teammate Aubry Botkin finished second in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.38.

Port Angeles’ Gracie Long finished seventh in the 1,600-meter run at the State 2A meet at Mount Tahoma High School with a time of 5:08.58, a personal record that also broke the 33-year-old Port Angeles school record set by Heather Lucas in 1984 (5:09.8). Long also came in 12th in the high jump.
