STATE TRACK AND FIELD: Two more state champions from the North Olympic Peninsula — 3RD UPDATE

TACOMA — The North Olympic Peninsula’s track and field state championships accumulated this weekend is now five.

The Sequim boys 4×400-meter relay team of Oscar Herrera, Alex Barry, Miguel Moroles, and Jason Springer won the 2A state championship with a time of 3:22.53.

The Wolves improved their fourth-place preliminary time by more than 2 seconds.

At the Class 1A state meet at Eastern Washington University, Ryan Clarke won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 9:39.46.

Clarke also won the 1A cross country state title in the fall.

CHENEY — The Neah Bay boys 4×100-meter relay team won the Red Devils’ second state championship of the Class 1B track and field championships.

The Red Devils’ 4×100 relay team of Cole Svec, Chris Martinez, Elisha Winck and Cameron Buzzell was the only team to break 45 seconds, running a 44.87 to win the title Saturday afternoon.

The relay state title and Winck’s triple jump championship Friday are Neah Bay’s first track and field championships since Rob Moss won the javelin in 1984.

CHENEY — The North Olympic Peninsula has another state champion: Neah Bay’s Elisha Winck won the triple jump at the Class 1B track and field meet at Eastern Washington University.

Winck jumped 43 feet, 8 inches in Friday’s finals to beat second-place finisher Sam Schafer (41-05.75) by more than 2 feet.

TACOMA –Sequim senior Alex Barry is the Class 2A state champion in the javelin.

Barry threw the javelin 185 feet, 1 inch to earn the title at Mount Tahoma High School on Friday morning.

Jackson Oliver added to the Wolves’ state accomplishments with a second-place finish in the high jump.

Oliver and three others jumped 6-04, but Kingston’s Max English wins the title by judge’s decision based on misses.

On Thursday, a pair of Port Angeles distance runner earned spots on the podium.

Senior Peter Butler placed seventh in the boys 1,600, and freshman Gracie Long finished eighth in the girls 1,600.

1B/1A MEET

CHENEY – Paul Frantz won a medal on the first day of his first state track and field meet.

The Crescent freshman took third in the 1,600-meter run at the Class 1B meet Thursday night at Eastern Washington University.

Frantz’s teammate, Martin Waldrip, placed 10th in the 1,600 to narrowly miss the podium.

In the 1B girls 3,200, Kaylin Signor earned a sixth-place medal Thursday.

Neah Bay’s Faye Chartraw earned her second straight third-place finish in the 1B shot put Friday. Clallam Bay’s Sami Metcalf also medaled, taking seventh, while Crescent’s Shannon Williams placed 10th.
