CHENEY — Clallam Bay’s Clayton Willis won the Class 1B long jump state championship late Saturday afternoon.
Willis jumped 20 feet, 5 inches to claim the title. The freshman placed in all three individual events in which he competed. He also placed fourth in the triple jump and eighth in the 400-meter run.

TACOMA — Sequim’s Waverly Shreffler ran faster than she’s ever run and faster than everybody else Saturday at the Class 2A state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma High School.
Shreffler, a senior, won the 2A state title in the girls 800-meter run by finishing the race in a personal-best 2 minutes, 19.11 seconds.
Shreffler beat the second-place finisher, Grace Oswin of Squalicum (2:20.19), by more than a full second.
Saturday morning’s final was only the third time Shreffler has run a sub-2:20 in the 800. The other two came in Friday’s preliminaries and April 30 at the Shelton Invitational.
Shreffler’s state title in the event is added to district, subdistrict and Olympic League 2A championships. The top eight finishers in each event reach the podium.
Two other Wolves earned a pair of state podium finishes apiece at the 2A state championships, which ran Thursday through Saturday.
Oscar Herrera placed third in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles.
Jackson Oliver finished sixth in the high jump and eighth in the boys 800.
Elizabeth Sweet was one spot away from a state placement, but she did break her own Sequim freshman pole vault record with a height of 10 feet.
Port Angeles sophomore Gracie Long earned multiple state medals for the second consecutive year. She placed sixth in the 1,600 and eighth in the high jump.
Long’s time of 5:14.47 in the 1,600 was a personal record by more than 2 seconds.
Roughriders senior Jacob Kennedy followed up his District 2/3 championship in the shot put with an eighth-place finish at state.
Class 1A
Redhawks relay finishes second
CHENEY — Port Townsend sprinters Seren Dances and Koby Weidner both reached the podium at Eastern Washington University.
Dances placed fifth in the boys 100-meter dash and Weidner came in seventh.
Dances and Weidner also were part of the Redhawks’ second-place 4×100 relay, joining Kyle Blankenship and Carson Marx to record a time of 43.05 seconds.
Chimacum’s Sam Golden was seeded 11th going into state in the 300 hurdles, but turned in the sixth-fastest preliminary time and then placed fifth in the finals.
Class 1B
McCoy, Willis each medal twice
CHENEY — Clallam Bay’s Molly McCoy and Clayton Willis each earned multiple medals at the 1B meet at Eastern Washington University.
McCoy, a junior, placed fourth in the girls 100-meter hurdles and eighth in the high jump. She also teamed up with Atokena Abe, Miriam Wonderly and Jennica Maines to place fourth in the 4×100 relay.
Willis, a freshman, took fourth in the boys triple jump and eighth in the 400-meter run.
Kaylin Signor, also of Clallam Bay, reached the podium in the girls 3,200 for the second straight year, placing sixth.
Bruins senior Alan Greene took eighth in the boys javelin.
Neah Bay’s Cameron Buzzell sprinted to two fifth-place finishes, in the boys 100 and 200.
Grace Baillargeon placed fourth for Crescent in the girls 400.
The Loggers earned two medals in the boys discus: Wyatt McNeece placed sixth and Neil Peppard was seventh.
Jordan Scott placed seventh in the boys 110 hurdles. He was one spot away from placing in the 300 hurdles, in which he finished ninth.
McKenzie Brannan notched another seventh-place showing for the Loggers, doing so in the girls javelin.
