STATE TENNIS: Sequim duo off to state

SEQUIM — Sequim’s Hannah D’Amico and Jessica Dietzman stayed the course last week and now are the Wolves’ second doubles team to earn a 2A state berth this school year.

They went 4-1 at the West Central Districts tournament last week at the Kitsap Athletic and Tennis Center in Bremerton to take fourth place into the state championships on Thursday at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.

D’Amico, a senior, and Dietzman, a freshman, join Sequim seniors Justin Porter and Stephen Prorok who also took fourth at the West Central Districts III doubles tournament last October in Bremerton.

Porter and Prorok qualified for state for the first time, too, after playing three years together. It was also their first trip to districts after falling one match short at last school year’s Olympic League Tournament.

D’Amico and Dietzman open state Thursday against Bellingham’s Alice Heibert and Sophia Lawrence while Porter and Prorok play the same day against Carl Myers and Weston Weller of Tumwater.

To get to state, Sequim’s girls defeated three Foster teams and a White River pair and dropped their only match to second-place finishers Stella Fosberg and Chloe Watson of Highline 4-6, 2-6.

They opened with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win, followed by the loss to Fosberg and Watson, but in the consolation bracket, they won three in a row, including a 6-3, 7-5 win over Aileen Nguyen and Cora Padilla of Foster for fourth place.
