STATE SWIMMING: Port Angeles, Macias shine bright on big stage

FEDERAL WAY — Port Angeles junior swimmer John Macias earned two fifth-place finishes as the 2A state swimming and diving meet at King County Aquatic Center.

Macias placed fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (two minutes and 2.08 seconds) and in the 100-yard backstroke (56.07 seconds) to lead the Roughriders to a 12th-place finish with 77 points.

Macias advanced to the finals with a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley and fourth in the 100 back.

Jay Liang added an eighth-place showing for Port Angeles in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.47.

Wei-Yan Fu took 12th in the 100 butterfly (56.92 seconds) and Tristin Butler finished 14th in the 500 freestyle (5:22.32).

The Riders had a pair of top-10 relay finishes. Macias, Liang, Fu and Butler took ninth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.19.

Those four also teamed up to place 10th in the 400 freestyle relay (3:31.43).
