STATE SWIMMING: Port Angeles boys finish eighth at state

FEDERAL WAY — The Port Angeles boys swim team picked seven top-10 finishes and came in eighth at the state 2A swim and dive championships held at the King County Aquatic Center on Saturday.

The best Port Angeles finish was by the 200 freestyle relay team of Adam Weller, Landon Close, Josh Gavin and Alex Che. They finished sixth, just two seconds out of second place, with a time of 1 minute, 35.35 seconds.

The Roughriders’ 400 freestyle team of Weller, Blake Nahory, Adam Boyd and Close finished ninth with a time of 3:35.85. The 200 medley team of Nahory, Weller, Gavin and Che finished 10th with a time of 1:47.74.

Individually, the Riders had four top-10 finishes. Gavin had the highest individual finish with a ninth place in the 100 butterfly (57.65). Gavin also came in 10th in the 200 individual medley (2:10.73).

Che finished 10th in the 50 freestyle (:23.45) and 11th in the 100 butterfly (51.71).

Weller finished 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:53.34).

Nahory came in 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:00.98).

Sequim’s Colby Ellefson picked up points in two long-distance events.

He came in 12th in the 500 freestyle (5:19.14) and 15th in the 200 freestyle (15:56.95).

Thanks to Ellefson’s efforts, Sequim collected seven team points and came in 30th.

Anacortes won the state championship with 280 points.
