FEDERAL WAY — The Port Angeles girls swim team showed that last year’s second-place finish at the State 2A championships was no fluke, as the Roughriders came away with their second straight top 3 finish at the State 2A swim meet this weekend.
The Roughriders finished a strong third this year. In fact, Port Angeles, Liberty (champions this year and last) and North Kitsap dominated the meet. Liberty ended with 298 points to 248 for North Kitsap and 173 for Port Angeles.
Sequim finished 18th with 40 points and Port Townsend 30th with five points.
The Roughriders had nine girls finish in the top eight in eight events. Their best finish was fourth by the 200 medley relay team of Kenzie Johnson, Nadia Cole, Felicia Che and Erin Edwards with a time of 1:54.50. That was good for 30 points.
Johnson, Cole, Che and Emma Murray picked up a sixth place in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:51.41. Johnson and Cole also had four top-eight finishes in individual events, finishing in the top eight in a total of six individual and relay events.
Sequim’s Sonja Govertsen also had an outstanding meet, with two top-eight finishes. She finished fourth in the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 25.24 seconds and came in sixth in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 55.78. Govertsen picked up 28 of Sequim’s 40 points in those two races and helped Sequim’s medley relay team pick up another 11 points.
The Port Angeles girls grabbed a ton of points in the diving. Cassii Middlestead came in fifth with 290.5 points and Lum Fu came in seventh with 282.95 points. The pair picked up 26 points for the Roughriders.
