FEDERAL WAY — Led by a solid showing from McKenzie DuBois, the Port Angeles girls swim team finished ninth at the state 1A/2A state swim championships held at the King County Aquatic Center on Friday and Saturday.
DuBois had the best showing for the Roughriders, finishing fourth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1 minute, 1.40 seconds. She bettered her prelim time by more than a second.
DuBois’ finish earned the Riders 15 points. She picked up another 12 points in the 200-yard individual medley by finishing seventh with a time of 2:20.16.
After DuBois’ pair of top-8 finishes in the first six events of Saturday’s finals, she had collected 27 points, and Port Angeles briefly climbed all the way up to sixth place in the state with 66 team points. The Riders ultimately finished with 90 points and tied for ninth with Squalicum. Pullman won the state championship with 290 points. More than 35 schools competed in the 1A/2A meet.
Senior Anne Edwards also picked up 12 points for the Riders. In her final meet for Port Angeles, she finished seventh in the 1-meter diving with 256.20 points to earn her 12 points. Aubrie Scott of Crescent, who dives with the Port Angeles team in the regular season, came in 14th in diving with 207.25 points, earning three points for the Loggers.
Port Angeles’ Grace Possinger made it to the diving semifinals, finishing 17th with 132.65 points.
Harper McGuire also earned 16 points for Port Angeles. She finished eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:46.80) to pick up 11 points and 12th in the 200 freestyle (2:09.33) to earn five points. The Riders collected 18 total points in the 500 freestyle as McGuire’s teammate, Yau Fu, finished 10th (5:48.82) for seven points.
Port Angeles’ best relay showing was in the 200 medley relay, coming in ninth place. The team of McGuire, DuBois, Fu and Edwards finished with a time of 2:00.35 to collect 18 team points.
The Port Angeles 400 freestyle relay team — Danika Asgeirsson, Rachel Cooper, Fu and Sage Hunter — came in 14th with a time of 4:11.12, shaving 1.74 seconds off their preliminary time to score six points in the day’s final event to give the Riders enough points to finish inside the top 10.
Other Port Angeles swimmers who competed include:
• Sara Wilson, 100 butterfly, 13th, 1:07.04, four points.
• Asgeirsson, 100 backstroke, 18th, 1:09.01.
• Hunter, 100 backstroke, 21st, 1:10.20.
• Cooper, 100 breaststroke, 20th, 1:20.22.
• Edwards, 50 freestyle, 24th, 27.91.
Sequim
Both Sequim and East Jefferson had swimmers at the state meet, with Sequim gathering four team points.
The best showing for Sequim was by the 200 medley relay team, which finished 15th and scored four points. The team of Lauren Sundin, Melanie Byrne, Melia Nelson and Hi’ilei Robinson had a time of 2:09.11.
Sequim’s 200 freestyle relay team of Sundin, Nelson, Byrne and Robinson, finished 19th with a time of 1:56.63.
Sundin finished 22nd in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:10.39.
East Jefferson
The best showing by East Jefferson was in the 200 freestyle relay. The Rivals finished 17th (1:56.40) as three out of the four members of the team — Akeyla Behrenfeld, Juliette O’Hara and Serena Hanby-Perless — are freshmen. Magdaline Ferland is a junior.
The same four girls finished 19th in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:20.04.
Behrenfeld also finished 24th in the 100 freestyle (1:01.79).
